Creep resistance without sacrificing toughness

Sc microalloying with sub-rapid solidification creates atomic-scale compositional dipoles in the Al₁₁Ce₃ eutectic phase, ductilizing the brittle intermetallic and enabling a 3-fold increase in elongation and over 8-fold increase in fracture toughness while retaining excellent creep resistance at 300°C.
