Polycrystalline Heavy-Metal Spin-Current Device

Out-of-plane spin polarization ready to use

For the first time, efficient out-of-plane polarized spin current is generated in sputter-deposited polycrystalline heavy metals via broken electric symmetries in both transverse and perpendicular directions, enabling field-free perpendicular magnetization switching without single-crystal substrates, fully compatible with semiconductor integration.

Advantages

Both damping-like and field-like spin-orbit torques can be tuned significantly by varying the length, width, thickness of devices and the type of heavy metals

Enables deterministic, nearly-full, external-magnetic-field-free switching of a uniform perpendicularly magnetized FeCoB layer (core structure of magnetic tunnel junctions) with high coercivity

Switching achieved at a low current density
