USSP-Treated TiAl Alloy

76% lower oxidation gain

Ultrasonic shot peening introduces an Al-enriched layer and nanocrystalline surface, promoting a continuous dense α-Al₂O₃ scale at 900 °C and greatly enhancing oxidation resistance.

Advantages

Mass gain reduced by 76%

After USSP treatment, the mass gain after 100 h at 900 °C is only 24% of the untreated sample, indicating much better oxidation resistance.

Self-forms dense alumina

The Al-enriched layer promotes the development of a continuous and dense α-Al₂O₃ scale during oxidation, which blocks oxygen inward diffusion.

Interfacial nitride barrier

The fine-grained structure provides abundant short-circuit diffusion paths, accelerating the formation of a continuous Ti₂AlN layer at the oxide scale/alloy interface, which acts as an effective barrier against inward diffused oxygen.
